Preface

 There are seven statements made by Jesus, and recorded in the Gospel of John, that are loved by Christian believers because of the insight they give into his self-identity.  These are known as the ‘I AM’ statements and they expose aspects of Christ’s self-understanding.  At age twelve he already knew that God was his father (Lk. 2:49) and that he was obligated to engage in the ministry God had called him to.  He had given himself to his father’s ‘business’, and he grew in his understanding of his divine nature.  

Jesus was God’s final ‘self-disclosure’ (Heb. 1:1,2), and through his words and works he revealed who he was and what he was called to do.  He was the God-man, the Savior, the single source of eternal life (Jn. 14:6).  It’s by him, and him alone, that we’re given true knowledge of God and his redemptive will.  It’s because of his self-revelation that we have some understanding of God’s gracious nature and his free gift of eternal life given to all who believe.  Hopefully this small book will strengthen your faith and deepen your devotion to Christ as Lord!
